Volunteer Opportunities Offered

Front Desk, Data Entry, Events, Cleaning, Office Work, help in the Curatorial Department, Garden Work Number of Days per week you would like to volunteer (please circle): Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday If chosen to become a volunteer at the Barker Mansion, you will be assigned a supervisor and training will be provided.

Rules For Volunteering At The Barker Mansion

The Barker Mansion contains 38 rooms, 7 fireplaces, and 10 bathrooms. Most of its fireplaces are made of hand-carved marble; the walnut and mahogany woodwork is especially beautiful.

90% of the furnishings and decorative arts are original to the house. The collection must be respected at all times.

There are certain rules that must be abided by:
I will take the utmost care when working in the building, and the garden.
I will only touch Collection items with oversight of the Mansion’s Curator.
I will maintain contact with my supervisor(s).
I will maintain a business appearance.
I will treat all patrons, volunteers, interns, and staff with the utmost respect and dignity.

For scheduling purposes, volunteers shall inform their supervisor as soon as possible if they are unable to work on a planned day, or if there is a change in start or end times. Each volunteer is required to record daily attendance on the sign in/sign out log kept at the front desk. (not signing in/out are grounds for dismissal).

I understand that I can approach my supervisor with any problems that I may have regarding my duties or interpersonal relations relating to the Mansion.

I will notify my supervisor of any special needs that I may have.

Volunteers do not have access to non-public areas unless specifically authorized by staff.

Permission must be granted each time and is not considered blanket.

If you are in doubt about what to do in a situation, ASK!

High Scool Student Volunter Form

Volunteers shall report any accidents, emergencies, or work-related problems immediately to museum staff.

Backpacks and large bags must be checked in by Mansion staff and stored in a locker on the Lower Level.

Food, chewing gum, and drinks are not allowed in the Mansion.

Accessibility

The Barker Mansion has an accessibility ramp in the rear of the building so guests can access the first floor and first floor bathroom. The lower level is accessible via two chair lifts. We ask that those who require the ramp call ahead so that staff can meet guests at the side entrance on 7th Street: (219) 873-1520. Please contact the Mansion with any questions. We are happy to help!
